news. all right let's go back to washington now because president obama may be signaling that there is some flexibility in the battle over raising tax rates. here he is yesterday. >> i am ready and able and willing and excited to go ahead and get this issue resolved in a bipartisan fashion so that american families, american businesses have some certainty going into next year. and we can do it in a balanced and fair way, but our first job is to make sure the taxes on middle class families don't go up. martha: okay. so president obama is also saying that he wants to raise taxes on families earning more than $250,000, but that move would only generate about $85 billion a year. that is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of u.s. debt. and that number is about what the federal government spends in just eight days. so if he gets what he wants everybody over 250,000 pays more it's going to cover eight and a half days of the government spending amount and some would say the government spending problem. art laugher joins me now. architect of reagan tphopl i raeug reagann

to reach out to republicans in order to avoid the fiscal cliff. president obama first invited romney on election night when romney called to concede and the romney adviser said it is very gracious and the right thing to do. no aides will be present at today's meeting. the two will speak one on one. even though the two parties are saying they are willing to reach across the aisle during fiscal cliff negotiations, we're not seeing much in terms of a deal. the latest roadblock is the cost of federal retirement programs. republicans are staying is up to the president to cut back on medicare medicaid and social security but democrats want entitlement programs completely off the table. today, the white house is sending treasury secretary timothy geithner and congressional negotiator rob neighbor to capitol hill where they will lay out their proposal with speaker boehner. more bill press is coming up after the break. as always, we're live in our chat room and would love to see you there. current.com/billpress. we're rig

seems to have the leverage right now, craig, and whether it was president obama's re-election, whether it's some of the republicans like the sound you actually played from tom cole who seems to be going to the white house position, the bush tax cuts should be extended for the middle class, but for the middle class only. so the white house by creating all these big demands including more tax revenue, but also saying, hey, congress, we want to take away your power on the debt ceiling limit to have all these asks that tim geithner apparently made was basically to make republicans cave on the one thing the white house really wants, and that is to decouple the bush tax cuts for the middle class and the wealthy. >> do you think the white house has done a good job explaining that every american will get a tax cut on their first $250,000 of income? >> that's a great question and president obama made that in his remarks today. he's actually been making it in the past. and it is actually something that we as journalists haven't done a very good job pointing out. that even if you are a billionair

at harvard kennedy school where right this very minute senior campaign managers from the romney and obama campaign and every other campaign are being debriefed by top political reporters and it is interesting because obama clearly sees that he has a mandate out of the election on fiscal cliff issues. even though it wasn't a huge issue in the debate the white house is behaving like it has that mandate. what you have been seeing is republicans showing signs of flexibility and i am not just talking john boehner saying revenue is on the table. we have republican senators saying they will stand up to the grover norquist tax pledge. they're willing to break it which is pretty big news. we also have the influential member of congress, republican tom cole saying we have got to agree to extend the tax cut just for those people making $250,000 and below and letting the more wealthy be taxed. definitely flexibility but what you see from democrats is an unwillingness to do serious entitlement reform that would lead to reductions in spending. they want to kick the can down the road and do more of the
